Materials
You can sew your skirt in many different materials, but if you’re a beginner, I’d recommend a woven cotton fabric. I most often sew from old duvet covers, sheets or tablecloths, for example.
Your fabric needs to be 155 cm wide x the length you want the skirt to be. On top of that, you’ll need enough fabric for the pockets and the waistband. You’ll find all the measurements in the next section.

- 5 cm wide elastic
- Sewing thread that matches your fabric
Design ideas
It’s almost only your imagination that sets the limits when it comes to the design of your skirt. Besides choosing whether it should be a mini, midi or maxi skirt, you can also easily change how much volume the skirt has.
In this guide I’ll show you how to make the skirt look like the photo at the top of the page. If you want less volume in the skirt, your fabric needs to be narrower than what I show.
You’ll need a fair amount of fabric to make a maxi skirt with plenty of volume. The image on the right shows you how to calculate how much fabric you need.
You’ll need to cut 4 pockets, which comes to around 85 cm x 30 cm of fabric in total. You can either draw your own pocket pattern, or download mine here.
