How to sew your garland

Below you can read my step-by-step instructions for sewing a garland. This guide explains how to make a garland that fits 5 metres of bias tape. At the bottom, you’ll find a direct link to a video showing you how.

Method

  1. To make a triangle, cut out two pattern pieces. You’ll need 22 triangles for the whole garland, meaning you’ll need to cut out 44 pattern pieces in total.
  2. Place two pattern pieces right sides together, and sew along the two longest sides with a 1 cm seam allowance.
  3. Trim close to the seam at the point of the triangle, being careful not to cut into the stitching itself. This will make your triangle neater once turned. Then turn right side out and press with an iron.

(Repeat steps 1–3 until you have all the triangles you need)
  4. Now you’ll use your bias tape. Place the first triangle 36 cm in from one end of the tape. Fold the tape over the top of the triangle and pin in place. Space the next triangle 6 cm along. Continue until all triangles are attached. Sew the bias tape in place with a 0.5 cm seam allowance.
